The Influence of Generations

” Mothers write on the hearts of their children what the world’s rough cannot erase “

We have just celebrated Mother’s Day in Canada and the United States.  It was a lovely day with my family as we also celebrated the Baptism of my infant three-month old grandson.  Grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all attended to experience this very meaningful and spiritual ritual in our Church, followed by a wonderful social time together.

What effect does all this have on our small offspring; our grandchildren, as they grow?

I believe that learning about our ancestors, who they were, where they lived, what they did for a living, and if they died from a health issue or an accident is so important to who we are and how we live our lives.

Through my own questions about my ancestors, I realize how vitally important it is to share as much information as possible with our children.  Give them names, dates and lots of statistics while we can.

There are other reasons to do some research into our ancestors.

I have read this; ” Our own sense of how well-loved and accepted we are in our families gets interpreted as a direct representation of how safe and loving the world at large will be “http://www.cedriccentre.com/author/mmorand/

This was often present in my life where my father would punish us for just being ‘kids’ who were learning and growing.  He would tell us that he did not want us to “have a big head”!  In other words, we should not become overconfident as we might appear to have an attitude or feel superior to others.  I have since learned that my father’s father; my grandfather, was a very strict man who probably stated this same phrase to my Dad when he was young.

There are also many positive lessons to be learned from our ancestors; their persistence during many difficult times, their love of their families and their tender moments.

We can’t go back in time to change what happened and we can’t go back to ask them why. All we can do is try to make the very best of life for ourselves and our children in the years to come.  Learn from early generations; from their mistakes and their successes.

Someday our future generations will be researching us.  What will they be saying? Will it be positive or negative?  This is up to us!
