Robbie’s Stairway

It was breakfast time as I sat at my dining room table glancing out my window to the neighbour’s house across the street.  There was the young couple’s small toddler looking at the cement stairway to the door.

The tiny one boy was trying to decide, ‘should I or shouldn’t I’ in his tiny one year old mind.  Daddy was only steps away preparing his lawnmower for the weekly Saturday ritual of grass cutting; a perfect time for Robbie to be brave and take the steps by himself.

Watching and being the protective grandmother of seven, the thought went through my mind that I needed to keep a close eye on this little one.  He might need help!

One step up, then another and holding on to the railing he climbed slowly and methodically.  His bright blue jacket kept him visible in my sight as I watched this brave little fellow learning and showing so much excitement at achieving such a feat.  Daddy was so busy with his lawnmower that he did not see what I saw and how sad for this Father.  A little milestone in Robbie’s life for sure.

The thought came to my mind that I’m just being a nosey neighbour and what they do is no business to me; but, the enjoyment of seeing this tiny little boy so excited and experiencing quite a thrill of accomplishment was really not making me a nosey neighbour but just a grandma!

Someday when little Robbie is old enough to understand I will share this with him; how I watched as he bravely and cautiously climbed that little stairway and how much pleasure it gave me to see that he could do this on his own.

If I was that small child and my neighbour told me the same story, how wonderful I would feel!  Would you?

Bravo Pat. An inspirational and dramatic tale of discovery and caring. You have a magical way with words that both inspires your readers to continue on and also ask themselves what they would do if they were in your situation. Keep up the great work. Enjoy the day. 🙂
